The masterplanning, architecture, infrastructure, streetscape design completed, the brief to develop the concept public realm and open spaces was awarded to GHE. With an understanding of needs within the local communities and municipalities, the extreme weather and coastal rhythms, the landscape team at GHE was able to apply their knowledge to ensure that the proposals could be efficiently approved and detailed.
Still at an early stage, the project aims to include local art, innovative configurations of standard urban furniture and best practice used in comparative international schemes. With several masterplan interventions located strategically on coastal areas, and a district park at the heart of the scheme, there is much scope for meaningful design that sets a precedent for using local materials and xeriscape planting in Bahrain.
The three island included in the brief are each themed and represent different aspects of cultural and societal stratum. Therefore designing to target specific social uses has allowed place and function specific design rather than generic spaces. This has led to an exceptional diversity to be layered into the overall scheme.
