Designing for children from preschool age to school leaving age requires an intimate knowledge of requirements and patterns of use throughout the day. Critical to the growth experience is to interact with the external environment regularly throughout the day and be challenged physically and mentally whilst safe at all times.
Therefore initially, areas were zoned for age groups, themed and requirements considered, and thereafter designed as whole to ensure a sense of institutional pride.
The overall design theme is to complement the architecture in using rectilinear shapes and pure forms, whilst a ‘quad’, ‘square’ or gathering plaza was centrally located to become the heart and focus for the entire outdoor experience. Formal in design, its function as meeting space at break times or gathering space for learning, flexible space for events and performance space, quickly became the focus and hub around which all the spaces are connected.
Contrasting and patterns and robust furniture have been used to enliven the scheme, whilst local and tropical planting themes have added to the context and learning experience.
